Who are we?
The largest national organization of Catholic women in Canada, reaching from coast to coast and into the North, the CWL was founded in 1920. In the Vancouver Archdiocese, 55 parishes have a group or Council, under the authority of the Diocesan Council. In turn the Provincial Council over-sees the work of the 6 dioceses in B C and Yukon, and is responsible to the National Council, who oversees all of the provinces.
Government input:
We are the only women's group in Canada that has the ear of both Federal and Provincial Governments, by framing resolutions at the Parish level on various “hot” issues of the moment, such as Prostitution, Trafficking and Pro life concerns. These resolutions are passed on for approval to Provincial and National councils, and then selected members from these have an interview each year with the relevant Government officials, either Provincial or Federal, and present the resolutions.
Our representatives are always well received and their input respected. Many of these resolutions contribute to changes in legislation. Currently we are concerned with proposed new Prostitution legislation and the question of allowing RU486, the abortion pill, to be available in Canada.
